I'm afraid I'm not following.  This was my line of thought on this puzzle:

[spoiler]I assumed you were supposed to turn the I and A into H and Z respectively due to the up arrows, and the two O's to two P's due to the down arrows.  That creates HZOO or some scrambled version of those letters, none of which creates a word.  What am I missing?[/spoiler]
